Tire Pressure Changes in Cold Weather

Tire pressure tends to drop when the weather gets colder. This is because air contracts as temperatures decrease. For every 10°F drop in temperature, tire pressure can decrease by about 1-2 psi (pounds per square inch).

It’s important to regularly check your tire pressure, especially in colder weather, as low tire pressure can lead to decreased traction, poor fuel efficiency, and increased tire wear. If you notice your tires are low, it’s a good idea to inflate them to the recommended pressure, which can usually be found on a sticker inside the driver’s door frame or in your car.

Why does this happen?

  • As temperatures drop, the air in your tires becomes denser and takes up less space.
  • For every 10°F drop in temperature, tire pressure can drop by about 1–2 PSI.

How can I check my tire pressure?

  1. Find the recommended tire pressure for your car. This is usually listed in the owner’s manual or on a sticker.
  2. Use a tire pressure gauge to check the pressure in each tire.
  3. If the pressure is low, inflate the tires to the recommended level.

How can I keep my tires from losing pressure in cold weather?

  • Check your tire pressure regularly.
  • Keep your car in a garage or covered area when possible.
  • Make sure your tires are properly aligned.
  • Avoid driving on icy roads.
  • Ideally, inflate your tires when they are still cool.
