Volvo

announced yesterday that in the interest of safety, and to help attain its zero-death, zero-severe-injury Vision 2020 initiative, it would

cap the top speed of its cars to 180 km/h or 112 mph from 2020

. While a strong safety-minded sentiment, it also means that Volvo cars will no longer be about speed — there have been a few fast ones, in the face of Volvo’s safety-first image. But at the same time, it seems Volvo is merely making it clear which Geely brands go fast and which won’t.

The new Cyan Racing concept, on the other hand, does over 190 mph.

Cyan Racing, which used to be Polestar before Polestar became all about electric Volvos, has presented a road-going concept based on its

Lynk & Co 03 World Touring Car

. This means a searing blue color and a big wing, and 528 horsepower out of the Volvo turbo four. And all of those horses are put to service via the front wheels, which we expect is asking a lot from the drivetrain and the 285/30R20 tires; there’s a multi-plate LSD to help with all the grunt. The torque figures are 504Nm, or nearly 372 lb-ft.

The transmission is a six-speeed sequential unit with steering wheel paddle shifters and 60-millisecond shift times. 62 mph is served in 4.4 seconds and 124 mph in 10 seconds. From 62 mph, the car will come to a complete stop in less than 100 feet, and the maximum attainable sideways G-force is 1.5 G. The suspension is adjustable Öhlins, as befits the occasion.

So, the bottom line is: Volvo doesn’t want to make fast cars anymore, but if you really want one, they have the contacts. And you can probably get it in a really strong blue.
