Don’t Crowd the Plow, Give Them Room to Work!

“Don’t crowd the plow” is a key safety tip for driving around snow plows. It means giving plow trucks plenty of space to do their job without putting yourself, the plow operator, or other drivers at risk.

Driving around plow trucks can be tricky, especially in winter conditions. Here are some tips to stay safe:

  1. Stay Back: Plows throw snow and salt, which can reduce visibility and cause a hazard. Maintain a safe distance (at least 200 feet behind) to avoid debris or sudden changes in speed.
  2. Be Patient: Plows move slowly, so it’s important to stay patient. Don’t try to pass them unless absolutely necessary, and only do so when it’s clear and safe.
  3. Don’t Pass on the Right: Plow trucks often throw snow to the right, and passing on that side could put you in danger of flying snow or ice. If you need to pass, do so on the left.
  4. Don’t Tailgate: The plow’s visibility can be limited, and the road conditions may change quickly. Following too closely can result in accidents if the plow stops suddenly.
  5. Use Caution When Overtaking: If you must pass, make sure you have plenty of room to maneuver. Only pass when there are no other vehicles in sight, and it’s clear ahead.
  6. Watch for Ice: The plow may expose patches of ice or untreated roads while clearing snow, so keep your speed under control and stay alert.
  7. Slow Down: Reduced visibility and road conditions can make things slippery. Driving at a slower speed gives you more time to react and improves your safety.
  8. Use Your Headlights: In snowy or low-visibility conditions, make sure your headlights are on so you’re visible to others, including the plow driver.
  9. Keep a Safe Distance from Snowbanks: As plows build up snowbanks along the sides of the road, avoid getting too close to them, especially on tight roads.

Staying aware of these tips can help ensure everyone stays safe while navigating snowy roads.
