Alongside the new RS5, Audi revealed its race car sister, the RS5 DTM at the Geneva Motor Show today. Designed to race in the competitive German touring car series the new race car packs a V8 making 500 hp and soft, sticky tires that make it even faster than last year’s DTM car.

That’s an impressive feat, not just because last year’s car won 10 races (the most of any car in the series), but because the car was specifically designed to be harder to drive, as per DTM regulations. Aerodynamics have been strictly regulated in an effort to better highlight driver skill, by making the cars trickier to drive.

Thanks to the more powerful engine and softer tires, though, the car can still turn in a hotter lap time. “You can feel this additional power in the cockpit,” says driver Jamie Green.

Audi  and the other teams have been allowed free reign to design the rear wheel arches and the front end. Here the changes mean more downforce.

“In addition, we’ve improved the components in terms of accuracy of fit once again,” says Stefan Gugger, project leader. “As far as gap dimensions are concerned, Audi has always stood out from the competition. Still, we’ve made another step that enhances aerodynamic performance.”

The new DTM car is also the first ever to be designed alongside the RS5 for the road. Like the R8, the race car and the road car now share many components.

The RS5 DTM is set start racing at Hockenheim  in Germany on May 6.
