A botched crimp in seatbelt pretensioners is causing Audi to recall about 1,700 2017 A5s Cabriolet. The fault may cause some pretensioners to launch into the passenger compartment, potentially causing injury.

The problem is a botched crimp on some of the pretensioners , that were made by Autoliv. Specifically the crimps that hold a micro gas generator, which in an accident.

“If this happens, the micro-gas generator could enter the passenger compartment, possibly striking and injuring vehicle occupants,” says Audi. Despite the risk of injury, this flaw does not prevent the seatbelts from working as designed.

Although Audi uses the part in many of its vehicles, tests showed that the A5 Cabriolet, due to the design of its seatbelts, is the only model on which a detached pretensioner is a risk.

Audi will replace the part free of charge starting in May.
