Audi CEO Rupert Stadler recently expressed interest in developing a hypercar to challenge Mercedes and Aston Martin.

“I am looking forward to what’s possible in terms of new technology,” Stadler told Autocar after they asked him if Audi Sport was considering making a rival to the Mercedes Project One. “There are some interesting ideas there, especially if you look to our interest in Formula E and electromobility.”

The CEO’s comments align with earlier comments from Audi Sport’s boss, Stephan Winkelmann.

“If it’s about a very limited car with a high price to test the value of the brand it might a good idea,” Winkelmann told Australia’s Car Advice in February.

“We’re just speaking hypothetically. But I think everything can be judged in one way or another,” he continued. “I see that there is a potential for those type of cars in Audi Sport, and given the history we have in racing, with Silver Arrows, WEC and GT3 cars as you see here, there are many ideas.”

Interest doesn’t necessarily mean that Audi will follow through, though. The R8 e-tron project, for example was canceled a little over a year after it was first proposed and the R18-based hypercar was also killed before it saw the light of day.

With Volkswagen’s renewed interest in electrification, though, and Audi’s increasing participation in Formula E Audi’s hypercar might have solid foundation off of which to build.
