Following an earlier preview, Opel has officially released information about the all-new Astra Sports Tourer, which offers more space despite having the exact same dimensions as its predecessor.
Debuting alongside the hatchback version at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Astra Sports Tourer is based on a new lightweight vehicle architecture that makes it up to 200kg (441lbs) lighter than the outgoing model. As a result, Opel says the new model will be more fun to drive as well as more fuel-efficient.
The latest generation Sports Tourer has the same dimensions as the outgoing model with a length of 4,702mm, a width of 1,871mm (with exterior mirrors folded in) and a height of 1,499mm. The entry-level Opel Astra Sports Tourer tips the scales at 1,263kg (2,784lbs), including the driver, and is thus 130kg (287lbs) lighter than the comparable outgoing model.
Despite that, the new model offers much more space for passengers and luggage. The driver has 26mm of additional headroom, passengers in the rear have 28mm more legroom, while the boot volume with the rear seats folded is now 1,630 liters.
Practical features include the automatic tailgate opening system which is activated by a small foot kicking motion under the rear bumper, optional 40/20/40 foldable rear seats as well as the FlexOrganizer product range with side rails, dividing nets and various fastening options.
There’s not much to say design-wise: the Sports Tourer features design cues from the hatchback version, with the highlight being the slightly arched sloping roofline that makes it look longer – an effect further enhanced by the divided C-pillar.
Engine options range from 95PS to 200PS and include latest generation diesel and gasoline units with a displacement range of 1.0 to 1.6 liters. The top-of-the-range engine available for the Astra Sports Tourer is the new 1.6 Ecotec Direct Injection Turbo rated at 200PS and 300Nm (221lb-ft) of torque (with overboost).
Like the hatch, the Astra Sports Tourer will be available with the IntelliLux LED matrix lights as well as assistance systems including Traffic Sign Assist, Lane Keep assist, Forward Collision Alert with Collision Imminent Braking and more. The Opel OnStar personal connectivity and service assistant and two new IntelliLink systems will also be available. The latest generation of the infotainment system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Order books for the new Astra Sports Tourer will open in Germany on October 10, 2015, with other countries to follow.
