German Court Keeps Dieselgate Document Confidential

A German court Wednesday barred the public disclosure of a document submitted by a plaintiff in a labor case brought against Audi. The plaintiff, former Audi engineer Ullrich Weiss, was fired last week for “gross breach of duty.”
The document, reports Automotive News, was related to Volkswagen and Audi’s diesel emissions scandal.
Audi motioned to have the document discussed confidentially, and reporters were asked to leave the public hearing while the court discussed the document.
“I regret that the public was barred,” said Hans-Georg Kauffeld, the lawyer for the plaintiff, declining to comment further.
Weiss has been on paid leave for a year and half, according to Germany’s Handelsblatt. Audi lawyer Christian Bitsch told the court, publicly, that Weiss knew about the scandal since September 2015. Bitsch went on to say that Weiss destroyed documents and encouraged his employees to do the same.
Weiss’s lawyer rejected the allegations.
German tabloid BILD, meanwhile, reports that a long hidden note telling Weiss to cheat was brought up in court Tuesday. Neither the German press nor the wider automotive press support this account, which was later reported on by Forbes.
