Just because you found a used Audi S4 listed cheap doesn’t mean it is a good deal.
Even though these cars are a blast to drive they can be very expensive to maintain. The engines are the same as the first Gen Audi R8. They have billet steel camshafts and crankshaft. The valve train is all roller. It is probably as close to an inexpensive factory race car engine as you can get.
I put together this short guide to help make buying and Audi S4 with the most common problems I encounter as an Audi Technician.
Timing chains and guides $6500 to $8500 Parts and labor
Catalytic converters Factory Converters $1500 each plus labor
Wheel bearings $500
Suspension control arms. $500 to $900 parts and labor depending on parts needed
Steering rack $3000 parts and labor.
Water cooler alternator $1700 parts and labor
Steering column lock $3500 parts and labor
Drive Belt $400 parts and labor
Oxygen sensors $500 each parts and labor
Tire Cost $580 to $690 depending on brand for a set of 4 tires.
Clutch and Flywheel cost. $2600
Broken Motor mounts $900 parts and labor
Hood latch switch $150 installed
Don’t let this list discourage you. This is a list of the most common problems I have seen checking out used cars that were bought and sold wholesale usually by people that could not afford the repairs and just traded the car in for something else.
