Safety Tips for Driving in the Rain

To drive safely in the rain, slow down, increase your following distance, and turn on your headlights. You should also avoid sudden braking or sharp turns, never use cruise control, and be prepared to handle potential hydroplaning by not braking or turning sharply if it occurs. When possible, avoid standing water and ensure your vehicle’s lights and wipers are working properly.

Vehicle and road preparation

  • Check your vehicle: Ensure your tires are in good condition and your wiper blades are clean and functional. Turn on your headlights and use your defroster to keep windows clear.
  • Avoid standing water: Do not drive through flooded roads, as the water depth is often deceptive. If you can’t see road markings, the water is too deep.
  • Use proper gear: Drive in a lower gear to help with control.

Driving behavior

  • Slow down: Reduce your speed, especially in the first 15 minutes of rainfall.
  • Increase following distance: Give yourself at least twice the normal distance between your car and the one in front of you (about six seconds).
  • Avoid sudden actions: Brake, accelerate, and turn gently and slowly to maintain traction.
  • Turn off cruise control: This feature can be dangerous in wet conditions and should be turned off.
  • Stay alert: Focus on the road ahead and be prepared for potential hazards.

If you hydroplane

  • Stay calm: Do not panic.
  • Don’t brake suddenly: Instead of slamming on the brakes, gently take your foot off the accelerator.
  • Steer gently: Continue to look and steer in the direction you want to go until you regain traction.
