We just finished up with our Porsche 996 piston project and it work out well.
We went with a new case half that had steel sleeves installed and three new pistons. We considered putting in a used engine, but good used motors are getting hard to find and at $7500 on the low side for a used motor you might be buying something with the same problems you already have or worse.
Sending out the original case have to be reconditioned was an option, but it had a three month turn around time instead of two weeks start to finish for this rebuild project.
