Does Cold Weather Change Your Tire Pressure?

Cold weather does decrease your tire pressure. As temperatures drop, the air inside your tires contracts, causing the pressure to decrease. Tire pressure drops as the temperature decreases because air contracts when it’s cold. For every 10° F drop in temperature, tire pressure can drop by 1–2 pounds per square inch (PSI).

What to Do:

  1. Check Tire Pressure Regularly: Use a tire pressure gauge to check the pressure at least once a month and before long trips, especially in colder weather.
  2. Inflate Tires as Needed: If you find that your tire pressure is low, inflate the tires to the recommended pressure, which is usually found on a sticker inside the driver’s door or in the owner’s manual.
  3. Monitor Tire Condition: Inspect your tires for any signs of wear or damage, as cold weather can exacerbate existing issues.
  4. Consider Seasonal Tires: If you live in an area with harsh winters, consider using winter tires, which perform better in cold conditions.
  5. Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather forecasts, as sudden temperature drops can affect your tire pressure.

Regular maintenance will help ensure your tires are safe and efficient in cold weather.
