Nissan

is adding $500 to the base price of its 2019

Kicks

subcompact

crossover

, which is now on sale after debuting in spring as a 2018 model.

The 2019 model comes with an official starting price of $19,535, including destination fee, for the S trim level, and starts at $21,865 for the top-of-the-line SR model. That puts it in good stead with fellow subcompact SUVs like the 2019

Hyundai Kona

, which starts at $20,970, and the 2019

Honda HR-V

, which climbs from $21,515.

All trim levels come standard with features like automatic emergency braking and rearview monitor and a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. There’s also a choice of seven exterior colors and five two-tone combinations for the floating roof, which itself is offered in black, orange or white. The SV and SR trims add blind-spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert technology to the mix, while the SR offers a premium package that includes the Bose Personal Plus sound system featuring two 2.5-inch speakers mounted inside the driver-side headrest.

The

Kicks created divided opinions

when it

bowed in Los Angeles a year ago

as a replacement for the

Juke

, thanks in no small part to its comparatively weak 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 122 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque. That remains the lone powerplant on offer for 2019 and is mated to a continuously variable transmission, with an

EPA

rating of a combined 33 mpg.

But quibbles about its underwhelming output or relatively tame styling have fallen flat with crossover-mad consumers.

Nissan

says the Kicks is its fastest-selling vehicle, with cumulative sales of 13,576 since going on sale in June.
