Introduced as a 2018 model, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is the Italian automaker’s first SUV. The Stelvio blends gorgeous Italian style with scintillating performance and a healthy helping of visual charm, along with luxury features.
Two new option packages add some visual flair to the Stelvio body. Nero Edizione option groups can add blacked-out trim elements and unique 20-inch wheels. A Sport Carbon package adds considerable carbon-fiber trim to Sport models, while a Carbon Fiber package does likewise to the top-end Quadrifoglio.
Three basic trim levels are offered — base, Ti, and Quadrifoglio — along with Sport, Ti Sport, and Ti Lusso versions.
All Stelvios except the Quadrifoglio use a 2.0-liter turbo-four rated at 280 horsepower and 306 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters mates with either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. A four-cylinder Stelvio can reach 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. A three-position Drive Mode selector is included, and aluminum paddle shifters are available.
Like the Giulia sedan, the Stelvio is offered in high-performance Quadrifoglio form, unleashing a Ferrari-sourced V6 that whips up 505 horsepower and 443 pound-feet. Acceleration to 60 mph occurs in a scant 3.6 seconds. Quadrifoglios come with anodized brake calipers and 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, among other performance-focused features.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia sport sedan brings brisk acceleration and sharp handling to the Fiat Chrysler luxury-car portfolio.
Giulias come in four basic flavors, each with a host of available options: base Giulia, Ti, Sport, and fire-breathing Quadrifoglio. Ti Sport, Lusso, and Sport Carbon editions are essentially option packages.
Base Giulias use a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine rated at 280 horsepower and 306 pound-feet of torque. Aluminum paddle shifters are available for the eight-speed automatic transmission. Lower-end Giulias may have either rear- or all-wheel drive.
The top-rung Giulia Quadrifoglio (Italian for four-leaf clover) retains the eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive, but drops in a Ferrari-derived, twin-turbocharged 2.9-liter V6 that cranks out a thundering 505 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration to 60 mph takes a mere 3.8 seconds, versus 5.1 seconds for a four-cylinder model.

The BMW 8 Series is the automaker’s ultimate personal luxury machine. It’s been a long time since there was an 8 Series in BMW’s lineup, and we’re glad to see it back. It takes the concept of executive motoring and puts it in far more body styles than just the simple two-door grand-touring coupe of the 1990s. Today’s version basically serves two purposes: a new brand-topping halo model and a replacement for the now completely-dead-in-America 6 Series, offering up similar shapes and sizes as that model once did.
Those body styles are a Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe, the latter of which has four doors. Each offers a range of models/engines that cover the spectrum. The frugal 840i is the base spec model for each shape, followed by the M850i, M8 and M8 Competition that represent an ascending staircase of high-performance versions.
Even the M versions, however, are capable grand tourers. Similar to its few competitors, the 8 Series’ character is that of luxury performance.
The 2020 BMW 840i models, all with standard rear-wheel drive and optional xDrive all-wheel drive, have a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six that produces 335 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. BMW claims 0-60 mph arrives in 4.7 seconds for the Coupe, but the engine feels more powerful than it’s rated.
An M850i xDrive is the next level of performance, and it’s a big jump from the inline-six to a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8. Power goes up to 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, bringing the Coupe to 60 mph in a scant 3.5 seconds. The Gran Coupe and Convertible both get there in 3.8 seconds.
The top-dog M8 has a revised 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that produces 600 horsepower in base trim and 617 horsepower in Competition spec. Both hit 60 mph in 3.0 seconds, which is near supercar-level acceleration. The top speed is 190 mph.

The Volkswagen Golf family of hatchbacks and wagons has a model for most tastes. The compact Golf ranges from mild to wild in performance, with the Golf GTI marking the hot end of the spectrum. A 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine powers the Alltrack and produces 168-horsepower.
The Golf Alltrack is available in S, SE, and SEL variants. Unpainted plastic fender flares on Alltrack wagons give a hint of outdoorsy and rugged intentions. The roomy interior offers 30 cubic feet of space with the rear seatbacks upright and 66.5 cubic feet when folded. The Alltrack model sits less than an inch higher off the ground than a regular Golf SportWagen and isn’t really intended for off-roading, but its all-weather capability is worth it for certain buyers.

Mercedes-Benz introduced a brand-new GLS SUV for the 2020 model year, but this discount applies to the previous 2019 edition. Traditional in design and appearance, the three-row 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS is a direct descendant of the former GL-Class SUV. Audaciously big and boxy, Mercedes-Benz offers a trio of trim levels: GLS 450, GLS 550, and AMG GLS 63. Each gets its own engine.
The GLS 450 is powered by a twin-turbo V6, rated at 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque and driving a nine-speed automatic transmission.
In the GLS 550, a 4.7-liter V8 churns out 449 horsepower and 516 pound-feet, using the same nine-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is standard on GLS 450 and GLS 550. An available Off-Road group adds a locking center differential and a reduction gear.
Topping the trio, the blazing AMG GLS 63 gets a 5.5-liter V8 that generates 577 horsepower and 561 pound-feet. A stronger seven-speed automatic is installed to handle the extra power.

The 2019 Infiniti Q60 is a lovely luxury sport coupe that makes an interesting alternative to more staid competitive models. Powered by a twin-turbo V6 that’s distantly related to Nissan’s ferocious GT-R performance coupe, the Q60 promises a flurry of power, particularly suitable for long cruises.
Pure, Luxe, and Red Sport 400 trim levels are available for 2019. Depending on trim level, the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 generates either 300 or 400 horsepower. The latter version is installed in Red Sport coupes. The capable seven-speed automatic transmission is equipped with a manual-shift mode.
Rear-wheel drive is standard. All-wheel drive is available for $2,000 additional, at every trim level. Red Sport 400 models include a Dynamic Digital Suspension, with normal and sport modes.

The Volvo S60 is a fine new luxury sport sedan, with a pretty exterior, radiant interior, and sparkling road manners. It ranks with the best of luxury sedans with refined power and responsive handling.
There are three drivetrains, so there are three characters of car. A T5 turbocharged four-cylinder makes 250 horsepower with front-wheel drive; a T6 supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder generates 316 horsepower with all-wheel drive. The very rare T8 plug-in hybrid is rated at 400 horsepower with AWD. All are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The EPA rates the front-drive T5 at 24 mpg city, 36 highway, 28 combined. With all-wheel drive and a supercharged engine, the T6 drops to 21/32/25 mpg. The T8 is rated at 22 miles of electric range with its plug-in hybrid pack on a full charge, and 31 mpg combined when it’s run in hybrid mode.
The S60 has an overall length of 187.4 inches long and a 113.1-inch wheelbase. Interior space is fine for up to four adults-and it’s a spectacular cabin in top trims, with beautiful wood and leather trim to buff up its pretty design.

The Volkswagen e-Golf, the all-electric version of the long-running Golf hatchback, serves up a taste of German engineering without burning a drop of fossil fuel. This version of the Golf was designed from the start to accommodate electric power, so it comes as no surprise that the e-Golf looks and feels nearly identical to the rest of the line. You get the same packaging, versatility, and driving dynamics that give the other versions their appeal.
Like its siblings, the e-Golf is conservatively styled, but that doesn’t mean dowdy in this case. The hatchback body looks crisp and mature. Some might even call it classic. If you’re looking for an EV that doesn’t look like one, this is it. The only clues are the shuttered grille and lack of a tailpipe, which actually result in a sleeker appearance. The e-Golf also gets unique LED lighting in front and a special wheel design.
Under the hood is a 115-horsepower electric motor that delivers 83 miles of range and 126/105 MPGe City/Highway. (MPGe is the EPA’s measurement of how far an EV can travel on the amount of energy in a gallon of gas.) A single-speed automatic transmission delivers power to the front wheels, and a lithium-ion battery pack is mounted under the passenger floor. The e-Golf offers quick-charge technology that can restore a depleted battery to 80 percent capacity in just 30 minutes.

Maseratis are so rare in North America that you’ll rarely see a Ghibli in most parts of the country. And because it is a beautiful and exciting sedan, yet relatively attainable, Ghibli has rocketed to the top of the charts for Maserati.
Most will agree that precious few four-doors come close to the visual appeal of the Maserati Ghibli. The iconic Maserati grille, the triple front-fender vents, the sculpted creases and curves, the fluid coupe-like roofline, the classic trident logos, the muscular rear-drive proportions and sinewy athletic stance, all add up to a unique blend of Italian sportiness and elegance.
Inside the cabin is an equally happy marriage of premium Italian craftsmanship and modern amenities, the latter partly thanks to Chrysler-based electronics. There are a lot of different Mini Coopers. There’s a two-door (which might be considered a three-door hatchback), a four-door (or seen as a five-door), a convertible, and a four-door Clubman with all-wheel drive and barn doors at the rear.
Engines in the mix include the standard turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder making 124 horsepower; the Cooper S with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder making 189 horsepower; and the John Cooper Works version of that engine making 228 horsepower. Each uses either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.
When the Mini Cooper was redesigned a few years ago, it got bigger and longer, forward of the windshield, to meet new crash-test standards. It grew 4.5 inches longer and 1.7 inches wider, a substantial difference, but being a mere 0.3 inches taller, it was barely noticeable. The result is charming and exceptional.
Traditional Mini design endures. Oval lights in the top corners of the front fenders, oblong grille in a chrome frame, upright windshield, almost-square taillamps, black pillars under a long roof, available in white. Mini says it’s the most popular option. Even more popular than the Union Jack.
The Convertible is handsome; with its rear flip-down tailgate it looks like a roadster.
