The upcoming Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class has been spied again

, and it seems like it’s very close to being revealed. We say this because this prototype has so little camouflage that we can actually see some painted body panels showing through.

As expected, the body is sleeker and more coupe-like than

the more conventional A-Class

. Up front, both cars have similar headlight and grille shapes, but the CLA’s fascia appears a bit more pointy and forward leaning. The lower grilles are smaller and more restrained than the large openings on the A-Class. This gives the

CLA-Class

a more svelte appearance.

In profile, we see the roofline is longer and has a continuous arc to it. The doors have less dramatically curved lines than the current CLA, which helps emphasize length. The rear of the car is much longer than the A-Class’s stubby tail, which also helps give the car a longer, lower look. The taillights are more slender than those on the A-Class, and the trunk lacks any provisions for a license plate, just like with the

AMG GT

and

Mercedes

CLS.

We expect the new CLA-Class to be fully revealed within the year, likely as a 2020 model. The base model will probably share the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder from the A-Class, which makes 188 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque.

We have seen an AMG version of the car being tested

, which will probably get a version of the current CLA 45’s engine. That engine currently makes 375 horsepower, but it’s possible

AMG

will squeeze out a few more for the new model.

Mercedes has shown an A 35 hatchback

with a less powerful engine, too, and so there could be a mid-level model to fill the space between the two CLA iterations.
