Ice and Snow – Take It Slow

Driving on ice and snow can be tricky, but with the right precautions, you can stay safer. Here are some tips to help:

1. Slow Down

  • Reduce your speed significantly, even if the road looks clear. Ice can be unpredictable, and sudden braking or sharp turns can cause you to lose control.

2. Increase Following Distance

  • Leave extra space between you and the car in front of you. Stopping takes longer on icy roads, so aim for at least 8-10 seconds between you and the vehicle ahead.

3. Use Winter Tires

  • If you live in a cold region, investing in winter tires with better traction can make a big difference. They’re designed to grip icy and snowy surfaces more effectively than regular tires.

4. Avoid Sudden Movements

  • Don’t make abrupt turns, stops, or accelerations. Smooth, gradual movements are key to maintaining control of your vehicle.

5. Use Lower Gears

  • If you’re driving a manual car, use lower gears to improve traction. For automatics, you can shift to “L” (low) or “1” to maintain more control when driving up or down hills.

6. Know How to Correct Skids

  • If you start to skid, don’t slam on the brakes. Gently steer in the direction you want to go and ease off the gas. If you’re in a rear-wheel skid, steer into it to regain control.

7. Keep Your Gas Tank Half-Full

  • This helps prevent your fuel lines from freezing and ensures you have enough gas in case of an emergency or if you’re stuck.

8. Clear Your Windows and Mirrors

  • Make sure your windshield, side mirrors, headlights, and taillights are clear of snow and ice before starting your drive. Visibility is crucial in snowy conditions.

9. Use Cruise Control Sparingly

  • Avoid using cruise control when driving on snow or ice. You need to maintain full control of the car and react quickly to changing conditions.

10. Be Prepared for Emergencies

  • Carry an emergency kit with items like a blanket, water, snacks, a flashlight, a shovel, and kitty litter or sand to help with traction if you get stuck.
