The 2017 auction season kicks off this year in Scottsdale and like most, I’m unsure what to expect. At the end of 2016 it seemed like the market for everything air-cooled was, at best, stalling. Then, everything changed with RM Sotheby’s Duemila Ruote auction results. Were those results just a flash in the pan or were they indicative of a broader market sentiment? It’s hard to say, but we’ll know soon enough when the first Porsche crosses the dias next week.

Bonhams

Of the 11 Porsches on offer at Bonhams in Scottsdale this year, 5 of them are offered with no reserve. The other six seem to have reasonable estimates so its possible we’ll see all 11 fall under the hammer. Besides the 904 and 914 mentioned below, two other Porsches of note are the 918 Spyder (we’re interested to see if premiums for Porsche’s latest supercar will continue to rise) as well as a 1987 Porsche 944 S. The 944 interest us simply because it’s the first time we’ve noticed a 944 popping up in what would otherwise be considered a "collectors" auction. This particular 944, while only showing 15,000 miles and presumably in "collector" condition, just simply isn’t the same caliber of Porsche we’re used to seeing at Bonhams.

Lot 88 – 1964 Porsche 904 GTS For Sale (Est. $2,000,000 – $2,500,000)

Chassis: 904-098 Engine: 99090

porsche 904 gts for sale bonhams scottsdale 2017

This ’64 904 is interesting for a number of reasons:

  • Very few overall owners
  • One owner for the past 28 years
  • Seemingly very little actual use but still has a brief race provenance
  • Original 4-cam engine was sold at one point and then reunited with the car during a later restoration
  • Retains its orginal interior but the exterior has been repainted in a non-original color

We’ll watch the bidding on this 904 with particular interest. It has all the hallmarks of being a "blue chip" offering, but there’s enough of a "story" with the car that as a buyer you’ll want to do considerable due diligence.

Lot 35 – 1970 Porsche 914-6 (Est. $65,000 – 85,000)

Chassis: 9140431518 Engine: 6404970

Completed at Porsche in April 1970, this rare 914-6 Targa was finished in Canary Yellow over a black leatherette interior, just as it appears today. The powerful six-cylinder Porsche was prepared for the US market, and equipped with fog lights, a leather wrapped steering wheel, a center arm rest and chrome disk wheels shod on Pirelli tires.

The 914-6 presents in very original condition throughout with a largely original interior, and an exterior believed to have had just one repaint several years ago. The car is listed in the 914 Registry, and it has been noted in the past that the odometer reading of less than 27,000 miles is in fact the car’s original mileage. Fitted with Fuchs wheels, the 914-6 retains its matching numbers, six-cylinder engine, and is offered with the Porsche-issued Certificate of Authenticity

Gooding & Company

Gooding has on offer 23 Porsches this year including a 993 GT2, a 959 Komfort, a 993 Turbo S and a Carrera GT. Of particular interest is he fact that 17 of the 23 Porsches offered for sale by Gooding in Scottsdale are being sold without reserve. Given the inventory on hand, this could make for a fairly exciting show.

Time and Location: SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA | Scottsdale Fashion Square | 19-20 JANUARY 2017

Lot 011 – 1997 Porsche 911 (993) Turbo S (Est. $400,000 – 500,000)

Last year, Gooding sold an Ocean Blue Turbo S with 22,000 miles on the odometer for $484,000. This black over Cashmere example for sale this year in Scottsdale has yet to see 10,000 miles. With just 3 owners and what is said to be meticulous care, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that this 993 could set a record for the Turbo S market. It will really depend on who’s in the room and which way the market seems to be heading, but I’d look at this car as a bellwether for the overall condition of the 993 market.

Lot 156 – 2005 Porsche Carrera GT (Est. $650,000 – 750,000)

There were only 1270 Carrera GT (Type 980) built between 2004 and 2007, and only 644 of those made their way stateside. Last year, at this same auction, a CGT with just 458 miles sold for $984,000. The CGT for sale this year, a five owner example, has a few more miles than that with just over 5,000 on the odometer. Still that’s hardly broken in. With a low estimate of $650k and a high of $750k its easy to speculate that this CGT will sell for more. Between the no reserves and low estimates, it seems like Gooding is hoping to find at least two bidders in the room interested in each Porsche willing to do battle and drive prices higher.

RM Sotheby’s

RM Sotheby’s may only have 13 Porsches for sale as compared to Gooding’s 23. However, what they lack in quantity they more than make up for in quality. As if a mirror image to Gooding, RM Sotheby’s also has on offer a Carrera GT, a 959 Komfort, a 993 Turbo S and 993 GT2. Buyers in the mood for any of these cars will have some serious decisions to make as offerings and price estimates are very similar. Check out RM Sotheby’s entire Porsche catalog for details on each car.

Russo & Steele

Russo & Steele has been coming on strong in past years with their Porsche offerings and this year is no different. The cars on consignment here are more "everyday" Porsches if you will. Still overwhelmingly air-cooled, the Russo & Steele offerings feature everything from a 356 A T2 Sunroof Coupe to a 911 S Strosek Edition Cabriolet. Unfortunately, Russo & Steel does not have estimates published at this time.

Barrett-Jackson

Like Russo & Steele, Barrett-Jackson has been making a push into the Porsche market place over the past few years and their offerings continue to improve. Sure they have a handful of newer, non "collectible" Porsches (a few earlier Boxsters and a couple of naturally aspirated 996s) but they also have a nice collection of air-cooled examples worth looking at.

The car I’m most interested in, and I’m almost ashamed to admit it, is the 959 Roadster recreation. There’s not a lot of information in their listing (we don’t know what it has for an engine, what the chassis is from, or any other details). Will it sell? There’s no reserve, so unless the starting bid is completely out of whack, or no one bids, this car should be going to a new home.

WorldWide Auctioneers

I have to say, I’m not familiar with Worldwide Auctioneers. However, based on their small offering of what appear to be clean and desireable air-cooled Porsches they are definitely one to watch. Of their five Porsches for sale, all three of the 356s are offered without reserve!
