The 2018 Q5 is rated at 23 mpg in the city, 27 on the highway for a combined 25 mpg, a 3 mpg improvement compared to the old Q5. Power comes from a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine that makes 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, sending the Q5 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds.

The real fuel economy champ here though is the new quattro all-wheel drive with ultra technology that allows the rear axle to be decoupled from the system, saving fuel when the vehicle doesn’t need four-wheel propulsion. Audi claims that the the Q5 looks 500 milliseconds into the future, and if grip is needed, the vehicle can re-engage the rear axle without the driver noticing.

This puts the Q5 at the top of its class of competitors for combined fuel economy, beating out the BMW X3, Lexus RX and Mercedes GLC 300. To be fair, the X3 and smaller Lexus NX beat the Audi on the highway by 1 mpg, but with 25 mpg combined, the Q5 beats the 24 mpg combined rating of those two luxury crossovers.

The 2018 Audi Q5 is arriving in dealerships now.
