A day after announcing plans to shed thousand of jobs in Europe, a new report from Reuters says that Ford plans to cut 1,150 jobs in Britain. The news comes from the Unite union, and nearly 1,000 job losses will reportedly come from the company’s Bridgend engine plant in Wales. The plant currently assembles four-cylinder engines in three different displacements.
Ford said it would look at plant closures and discontinue loss-making vehicle lines as part of a turnaround effort, and would start consultations with unions on the plans. Ford Europe employs roughly 53,000 people. The automaker says it’s aiming for a six-percent operating margin for its European operations. Ford says it hopes any job cuts can be achieved by “voluntary means.”
“Unite is fully committed to opposing any compulsory redundancies and campaigning strongly for Bridgend to have a viable future,” Des Quinn, automotive spokesman at Unite, said in a statement.
In Germany, the country’s Economy Ministry is reportedly in talks with Ford over expected job cuts in that country, a spokeswoman said on Friday. (Reuters contributed to this report.)
